Not a lot going on today – we’re just taking care of some loose ends. Returned our DVR, stopped by the apartment to pick up some stuff and do a quick cleaning, ran up to Davis to see an old friend, etc. Seeing J was awesome and so was meeting his kids, but Andy and I were much too tired to try to carry on a coherent conversation.

I did forget to mention that yesterday, while I was napping in the closet, Andy cleaned our refrigerator with Orange Guard because it said on the bottle that it was safe for food and humans. He neglected to notice the pictures of dead ants just above that.

We hit up B&N because I had literally read every book in the house before we packed them up. Here are my purchases from tonight:

  • Blink – Malcolm Gladwell (This one is for Andy – I’ve already read it.)
  • The Neverending Story Michael Ende and Ralph Manheim
  • Perdido Street StationChina Mieville
  • Bloodline - F. Paul Wilson (I highly recommend this entire series.)
  • A Prisoner of BirthJeffrey Archer
  • Best American Mystery Stories 2008George Pelecanos and Otto Penzler
  • The Case of the Missing BooksIan Sansom
  • I Know This Much is True – Wally Lamb

This should at least get me through Arizona. Andy has already promised that we can stop at bookstores along the way.

The Final Countdown December 7, 2008

I’ve never used professional movers before, so I didn’t know what to expect. These guys were fantastic! They showed up 90 minutes early and helped us pack, and had all of our stuff out of the apartment in less than four hours. They were definitely no t the surly teamsters that I expected. So Andy and I aren’t leaving town until Wednesday, and at this point all of our belongings are in a truck going to Alabama, Arkansas, Ohio and finally Indiana.

We’ve been packing like zombies for a few days now, and I nearly broke down today. For those of you who don’t know, I have (among other things) panic disorder which has been mostly under control lately. However, I got 4 hours of sleep last night and it took its toll this afternoon. My options were as follows: have a full fledged panic attack in front of our super nice movers or take a nap. I decided to take a nap, but the apartment was stuffed full of boxes and plastic and tape and people.

I calmed myself down a bit and thought about what to do. I ended up pulling my futon and blanket into our bedroom and taking a nap in the closet. For three hours.

A Reenactment

A Reenactment

This is how stressed out I was. I had a dream that Andy woke me up and told me that the movers were gone. I walked out in the apartment which was still filled with furniture, and turned to Andy, asking why all of our things were still here, and how we were supposed to fit all of these leftovers in our car for the trip to Bloomington. He started to explain, but I couldn’t hear him. I ended up screaming and crying hysterically and woke myself up. I then proceeded to go back to sleep and wake myself up with the same exact dream two more times.

When Andy woke me up for real, I was relieved to see that the movers had actually taken away everything they were supposed to. We are now comfortably curled up at the in-laws for the night, hanging out next to the fire and the Christmas tree and awaiting dinner.

PostScript: We bought a video camera for the trip and will be supplementing Holiday Road with videos as well as pictures. Here is a fantastic test video of the amazing and fabulous Ziggy.

PostPostScript: The video did not work, but I’m too exhausted right now to figure out why. Ziggy will be coming to the blog though!
